Bloomberg reports that OpenAI is currently negotiating with investors to secure a minimum of $30 billion in a pre-IPO financing round. The proposed capital injection would place the company’s market value at roughly $1.4 trillion. The fundraising effort is being positioned as a precursor to the firm’s anticipated entry into public markets, which is now expected to occur after next year rather than this year.
The latest round follows a pronounced acceleration in OpenAI’s revenue stream. A strategic emphasis on coding-related applications has driven a 70 percent rise in run-rate revenue since July, lifting the figure to $40 billion in August. This growth comes after Anthropic briefly eclipsed OpenAI at the start of the year, underscoring the competitive dynamics within the generative-AI sector.
Earlier in the year, OpenAI completed a private financing of $122 billion that assigned it an $852 billion valuation. That infusion was originally described as the final private capital raise before the company moved toward an initial public offering, a timeline that had been projected for the current calendar year. The new fundraising proposal therefore represents a departure from the earlier expectation of a single pre-IPO round.
Chief executive Sam Altman has signaled a shift in timing, stating that a public listing will not occur in 2026 as the firm concentrates on safety concerns. In an interview with Fortune, Altman warned that accepting a ten-percent probability of catastrophic outcomes by decade’s end would be unacceptable, echoing warnings from researchers about existential threats posed by advanced AI systems.
If the bridge financing materializes, Bloomberg says it will function as an interim capital source ahead of the eventual IPO, providing liquidity for continued development and safety initiatives. The infusion could also shape market expectations for the valuation of AI enterprises, as investors weigh the trade-off between rapid growth and the need for robust risk mitigation. The outcome will likely influence the timing and structure of OpenAI’s eventual public debut.
