Microsoft unveils Surface Laptop Ultra with Nvidia RTX Spark and Hybrid AI

The new laptop starts at $2,599, ships on October 16, adds magnetic USB-C charging, while Microsoft also introduced a $5,999 RTX Spark Dev Box and Hybrid Intelligence features for Copilot.

Microsoft concluded a Windows and Surface keynote in San Francisco, showcasing a suite of hardware and software updates. The headline reveal was the Surface Laptop Ultra, a premium notebook built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark Arm-based processor. The event also highlighted a new developer-focused mini PC, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, and a set of Windows enhancements centered on AI-driven assistance.

Pricing for the base configuration begins at $2,599 and includes an 8-core CPU, 24 GB of RAM and a 512 GB solid-state drive. The device ships on October 16 and features a 15-inch HDR touchscreen capable of reaching 2,000 nits of peak brightness. Microsoft replaced its proprietary Surface Connect port with a magnetic USB-C connector that also supports video, data and power delivery.

Microsoft also announced a set of Windows updates under the banner ‘Hybrid Intelligence.’ The new Copilot integration can read local files and execute actions across the operating system, while a refreshed search bar enables quick task shortcuts. Jacob Andreou, Microsoft’s EVP of Copilot, demonstrated the feature by instructing the Autopilot agent to locate tax documents, rename and zip them, then draft an email to an accountant.

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, priced at $5,999 for preorder, is slated to ship in November. Housed in a flat, 3D-printed anodized aluminum chassis that doubles as a heatsink, the mini PC runs on Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform with 128 GB of unified memory and a 100-watt thermal envelope. Designed for developers, it targets on-device AI workloads, supporting models exceeding 120 billion parameters for testing, prototyping and AI-assisted coding.

During the presentation, Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri described the new magnetic charging system, saying, “bring the connector close, and it snaps right into place.” Although the connector is proprietary, it plugs into a standard USB-C port that continues to carry video and data signals. The event also noted that Meta plans to release a native Windows app for its AI agent, following a September launch of a Mac version.

Microsoft’s Surface engineering team validates new devices in a windowless lab on its Redmond campus, where robots repeatedly press buttons, large antennas emit radio waves, and custom rigs drop objects from increasing heights. These stress tests aim to ensure that the Surface Laptop Ultra can withstand real-world handling and electromagnetic interference before reaching consumers.

The RTX Spark chip marks Nvidia’s first foray into Arm-based PC processors, and Microsoft is positioning the Surface Laptop Ultra as a direct competitor to high-end MacBook Pro models. By combining Nvidia’s GPU expertise with a premium Windows experience, the company hopes to demonstrate that locally accelerated AI, creative workloads and gaming can thrive on a laptop platform.
