Gudea uses AI to anticipate social media crises for enterprises

The San Francisco startup has secured $7 million in seed funding, serves roughly 40 clients including Fortune 50 firms, and plans to add city-block level geolocation to its narrative-tracking platform.

Online discussions spread across a multitude of platforms, and a seemingly minor post can quickly snowball into a public controversy. Gudea positions itself as a preventative tool, employing artificial intelligence to detect early signs of trouble before a situation escalates into a full-blown crisis for brands and organizations.

Unlike conventional social-listening services that merely count mentions, hashtags and impressions, Gudea’s system maps who is driving a conversation, how information moves, and the speed at which a story gains momentum. Its AI evaluates behavior patterns, relational networks and the pathways through which content travels across more than 500 mainstream and fringe sites, including X, Reddit and TikTok.

The company was founded in 2023 by Presley, Jonathan Sperber and James Thomin. Presley brings over fifteen years of experience in political campaigns and defense, Sperber specializes in disinformation research, and Thomin holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering with two decades in AI and machine learning. Their initial work with the George Washington Initiative adapted intelligence-community tactics used against groups such as Al Qaeda to domestic information campaigns.

Three years after its launch, Gudea reports close to forty paying customers. Its roster includes a Fortune 50 telecommunications firm, a Fortune 50 retailer, a leading AI research laboratory, a major music act, public-relations agencies and several government entities. In October, the startup announced a $7 million seed round co-led by Mudita Venture Partners and Silicon Road Ventures, bringing total capital raised to about $15 million.

Looking ahead, Gudea intends to enhance its platform with precise geolocation capabilities, aiming to pinpoint narrative origins down to the city-block level by next year. The firm also plans to let clients simulate advertising campaigns through its AI model to gauge potential negative outcomes before launch, a move that reflects growing concerns about the ease with which generative AI can fuel coordinated online attacks.
