Apple Strikes Reverse Acqui-Hire to Absorb Huxe Team and Technology

In a filing with European regulators, Apple disclosed a deal to onboard engineers and AI-driven podcast tools from the shuttered startup Huxe, hinting at future app enhancements.

Apple’s most recent regulatory submission indicates the company has entered a reverse acqui-hire arrangement with Huxe, a startup that specialized in personalized audio experiences. The filing states that Apple will bring both personnel and underlying technology from Huxe into its own operations, although the document does not identify which individuals are involved or the specific products that will be integrated.

Huxe was founded by engineers who previously contributed to the AI-generated podcast capabilities in NotebookLM, a tool that has recently been rebranded as Gemini Notebook. Those developers leveraged the same machine-learning techniques to create a consumer-facing app that generated customized podcast streams based on user preferences.

The company announced its shutdown on May 21, posting a notice that it would withdraw the app from both Apple’s and Google’s marketplaces, cease all services, and permanently erase user data. The announcement marked the end of Huxe’s brief public presence after its launch earlier in the year.

Following the closure announcement, Apple communicated the transaction to the European Commission on June 9, as required by competition rules. The filing released to the public does not disclose whether any of Huxe’s staff have accepted Apple’s employment offers, nor does it outline the intended use of the acquired technology within Apple’s product lineup.

The timing of Huxe’s wind-down coincided with Spotify’s debut of AI-driven podcast generation tools, announced a day earlier. Analysts speculate that Apple’s acquisition may be aimed at incorporating comparable generative audio features into its Podcasts application, positioning the firm to compete in a rapidly evolving market for automated content creation.

Industry observers note a growing enthusiasm among technology leaders for personalized audio as a potential successor to conventional podcasts, though consumer appetite for such formats remains uncertain. The lack of detailed information in Apple’s filing leaves the scope of any forthcoming product changes open to speculation.
