Google has added a new ‘Call for Me’ capability to its Gemini AI assistant, letting users ask the system to place calls on their behalf. The feature can inquire about product availability, book restaurant tables, or schedule medical appointments. It is currently in an experimental stage, limited to Pixel 11 owners who hold a Gemini subscription in the United States, and requires the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android.
When activated, Gemini dials the call using the user’s own phone number, routing the call directly from the device. Upon answer, the assistant introduces itself and can navigate automated menus, remain on hold, and provide a live transcript of the conversation. Users retain the ability to intervene at any moment, and Gemini may share personal details with the other party only after the user grants approval.
The rollout reflects a broader industry shift toward AI-driven agents that act as the primary interface for smartphones, moving away from purely app-centric designs. Competitors such as Meta have introduced agents like Muse and Instinct that also claim the ability to place calls on users’ behalf, signaling a growing emphasis on conversational automation across mobile platforms.
Google has experimented with similar functionalities for several years. At a past I/O developer conference the company demonstrated an Assistant feature that called a salon to secure a reservation, impressing the audience with natural-sounding filler words. In the previous year, the firm launched ‘Ask for Me’, enabling Gemini to query businesses about pricing or services. Additional Pixel tools such as ‘Hold for Me’, ‘Talk to a Live Rep’ and ‘Direct My Call’ already automate navigation of IVR systems.
Google describes the current deployment as a small-scale experiment because real-world conversations contain nuanced language that can challenge AI interpretation. The company says it will monitor performance, refine the system’s handling of diverse dialogue, and expand availability only after confidence in reliability and user safety is achieved.
