According to a report by TechCrunch, Google is experimenting with a ‘Buy’ button that appears on selected Flipkart product listings inside its Gemini AI and AI Mode. When users tap the button, a Flipkart-branded checkout flow opens directly on the AI interface, allowing the purchase process to continue without leaving Gemini.
The early trial is confined to a small catalogue that includes smartphones, other electronics and mobile accessories. Participation is limited to a subset of users, and only the listed items display the purchase option. This narrow scope lets Google gauge user response before expanding the feature to a broader range of products.
Google plans to extend the functionality to a wider audience in October, timing the launch to coincide with India’s major festive shopping period. The company views the addition as a step toward turning Gemini from a product-discovery tool into a platform that can complete transactions natively, reflecting its broader ambition for AI-driven commerce.
Rival AI developers are pursuing similar paths; OpenAI and Meta have begun introducing shopping capabilities within their own agents. The industry is moving from chatbots that merely answer queries to systems that can actually facilitate purchases, a shift that also raises competition over access to e-commerce sites. Amazon recently barred Meta’s Muse agent from its shopping platform, citing privacy and security concerns.
A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that the firm is “always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily.” The representative added that the company routinely runs experiments and declined to provide additional details currently about the Gemini checkout trial.
YouTube, also owned by Alphabet, unveiled a suite of AI-driven shopping tools at its Made on YouTube event in New York. The Ask YouTube feature will accept shopping queries, generate product-comparison tables and support voice commands for television users. The platform also broadened its creator-focused affiliate programme with Amazon in India, adding partners such as AJIO, Meesho, Snapdeal and Tata CLiQ, while reporting that over 450 million Indian users search for shopping content and that global shopping-related watch time reached 40 billion hours in 2025.
